THE ART OF CANTING - UNIQUE MOTIFS CREATED BY THE HUMAN HAND
The canting (originally spelled tjanting) is an ancient pen-like tool used when creating batik tulis, or hand-drawn batik, it transforms hot wax into lines of living art.

Made by hand, it consists of a bamboo handle, a small copper cup that holds melted wax, and a fine spout through which the wax flows. Simple in appearance yet profound in purpose, the canting embodies centuries of Indonesian craftsmanship and cultural expression.
The technique used is one of skill and instinct, and is entrusted to only one of our dedicated artisan. They guide the canting across the silk, tracing the pre-sketched design that resist dye. This calls for remarkable precision and a deep understanding of the flow of the wax, the pressure needed to penetrate the silk and steady pace that ensures a consistent application.
At QUARZIA we continue to explore new and contemporary interpretations of batik but the canting remains unchanged, a timeless bridge between past and present.
